Types of Timber Treatments - which Boron product to use

 

Treatment of wood needs to be selected according to the type of damage - timber decay can take a number of forms which are easy to recognise. If in doubt call our Qualified Timber Surveyors for advice or send us your timber decay photographs.

1. Dry rot - in timber, in masonry, in sub-site soil - apply Boron Powder in water, Boron Gel, Boron Paste and Boron Rods

2. Wet rot - in timbers indoors and outdoors - apply Boron Gel, Boron Paste and Boron Rods

3. Wood Boring Insects - Woodworm and Death Watch Beetle - apply Boron Powder in water, Boron Gel, Boron Paste and Boron Rods For House Longhorn Beetle call us for advice - 01626 331351.

4. Timber Roof and Floor Mould - white, blue or black spots on timber, lining felt, masonry - increase ventilation, apply Boracol 10RH

5. Chemical stains on roof or floor timbers - white stains and crystals on timbers can indicate water penetration - check for leaks - apply Salt Neutraliser - call us before buying to discuss the details - 01626 331351.

How to treat Dry Rot

1. Remove the source of moisture, ventilate, control humidity (use a Dehumidifier)

2. Cut out the decay to sound timber/plaster, where structurally beyond repair

3. Apply Boron Ultra 12 powder in water by spray to timber and masonry, brush on Boron Ultra Gel to end grain and vulnerable surfaces, inject Boron Ultra Paste and insert Boron Ultra Rods to 8-10mm holes drilled to prescribed hole pattern, to surrounding areas at least 300mm in all directions from the limits of the attack and to all timbers at or above 18% moisture content.

How to treat Wet Rot

1. Remove the source of moisture, ventilate, control humidity

2. Cut out the decay to sound timber, where structurally weakened beyond repair

3. Apply Boron Ultra Gel to end grain and vulnerable surfaces, Boron Ultra Paste and Boron Ultra Rods to 8-10mm holes drilled to prescribed hole pattern in timbers at or above 18% moisture content.

How to treat Woodworm

1. Remove the source of moisture, ventilate, control humidity

2. Cut out the decay to sound timber/plaster and/or de-frass

3. Apply Boron Ultra 12 by spray to timber, Boron Ultra Gel to end grain and heavily attacked surfaces.

How to treat Death Watch Beetle

1. Remove the source of moisture, ventilate, control humidity

2. Cut out the decay to sound timber

3. How to treat House Longhorn Beetle

1. Tap with a hammer or listen with a piece of tubing to establish the exact areas under attack.

2. Cut out any eaten or damaged areas to sound timber.

3. Inject Ultra Timber Paste into 8-10mm diameter holes drilled to prescribed hole pattern, and brush apply Ultra Timber Paste to all exposed uncoated surfaces.

How to treat Timber Mould in roofs and under the ground floor

1. Check the roof ventilation, particularly soffit vents, ridge vents and vent tiles/slate - they may be blocked by Insulation

2. Check the sub-floor ventilation - air bricks should be visible above ground and may need cleaning or adding

3. Treat the Mould with two coats of Boracol 5RH by spray or brush.

How to treat Chemical Stains on Roof Timbers - Lime or salts

1. Check for water leaks or gaps in tiles, slates or roofing felt - check ventilation and look for water stains

2. Clean the timbers thoroughly to remove all sand, cement or earth deposits - check for physical damage with a screwdriver

3. Treat affected areas with Salt Neutraliser by spray or brush.

Use wood preservatives and biocides safely. Always read the label and product information Data Sheet before use.

Wear the correct safety equipment and keep unprotected people and animals out of the treated area for the statutory period given on the label.

All products have some hazards and the COSHH Regulations (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) apply to ALL building repair and construction products that we sell, even Cement.
